Objectives

The department set up specialized scientific staff of the graduates of bachelor's and master's in marine chemistry through a series of courses that lead to student understanding of chemical laws that govern the overall structure of the seawater and changes in this structure, especially in coastal waters as a result of natural sources and chemical , biological and geological factors. The regional waters are of particular interest through series of courses where the student studies the chemistry of Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, hot brines and the non-living marine. The complete academic preparation for students is based on development of their capabilities through writing scientific articles, training on the preparation and conducting of scientific research.

The department contributes through its members in conducting research to identify the properties of the marine environment, and study the problems resulting from the different sources of pollution, and make recommendations to the concerned authorities. To achieve this goal the Department seeks always to provide the laboratories of department with the latest instrumentation in the analysis

The department provides expertise in the service of all the relevant agencies of the marine environment through the provision of consulting and conducting studies on behalf of these entities, and also contributes in the preparation of technical staff through development of their scientific and practical skills.

Department seeks to cooperate with universities at home and abroad to enrich the research aspect and stand on the latest developments in marine science, especially marine chemistry, as well as with private and public sector for integration in the formation of a database of chemical properties of the territorial sea of ​​the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .
